X

It’s hard to believe, but BLDGBLOG began exactly ten years ago today. It’s been a life-changing and incredibly unexpected decade for me, and, although 10-year birthdays justifiably mean little in the world of online publishing, I nonetheless wanted to mark the date with a quick post and a thanks: thanks for reading, commenting, critiquing, and following along, whoever and wherever you are.

The magic of a more or less anonymous audience is such that you never really know who you are writing to—after all, every post is also like a letter, an open postcard, a note directed outward at some unidentified reader or future friend—but that also means that the energy and support I have found over these last 10 years have both been all the more surreal and exciting.

For now, I just wanted to say thanks both to linkers and to haters alike—and a quick happy birthday to this strange digital thing I never thought would be anything more than a textual sketchbook. Here’s to ten more, be they weeks, years, posts, or decades.

  1. No, all the thanks goes to you, Geoff, for directing me to the most wondrous things people make and do!

  2. First post?
Geoff, I've been reading this blog off and on since just about the beginning. It's been a pleasure to be pulled along the path with an excellent and often tricksterish guide.

  3. Thanks for the comments! Much appreciated—it's also great to see some familiar faces (Glen, Alex, Marc, Sascha) from over the past ten years. I have to say, the last decade simultaneously feels like the blink of an eye and an eternity.

Ed—there are two Eds who I think that might be, but I'll raise a glass to both of you.

Snarl, glad to pull you out of the quiet and into commenting! Good to hear you've been enjoying the blog all these years.

Matthew, you've got a great blog, as well—thanks for the note.

Onward! We can all meet with our grey hair and faltering voices in a pub somewhere in 30 years' time and swap stories, wondering where the time went.

  4. Congratulations Geoff.

I accidentally discovered BLDGBLOG a few years ago when I was mildly obsessed with discovering subterranea in my own city. I've been reading ever since and turned a lot of friends on to the blog in that time that have appreciated it just as much.

It's such a joy to read because of how you write and the content of the posts. It's one of the few blogs I read regularly where I find almost every post like upturning something in an exciting new landscape and discovering what lies beneath.

Well done on 10 years, I look forward to many more.

  5. Congratulations Geoff on running what is consistently the most interesting blog on the internet. I've discovered so many amazing places, writers etc through this site over the years, and look forward to many more.

  6. I can't believe it's been 10 years!

It's fantastic that you are still working the same vein of neo-retro-futurist-architecture-landscape-psychology-anthropology-economics-ecology (or whatever you want to call it. 😉 )

And it's even more fantastic that it's led you to career opportunities.

Congratulations – and kudos to you.

Somewhere lost on a hard drive have got to be 7+year-old responses by you to really random comments by me.

    It's always interesting.

    Cheers,

    Zeke

  7. Thanks, Greg!

Zeke, I'll have to go back and dig through the old comment threads someday—there have been great replies over the years, including many, many tips that became posts (or even road trips) soon thereafter.

James, John, Paul, anonymous—thanks, as well. John, the subterranean posts have always been some of my favorites, and definitely won't be disappearing any time soon.

In any case, thanks again for the notes, and nice to see you all here!

  8. Happy Birthday! This is one of the few blogs worth coming back to year after year, post after post. Thank you for expanding the architexture of my mind.

  9. Wow, ten years and a huge contribution to the world.

BLDGBLOG is one of my favorite sites. Not only is the subject manner fascinating but the writing is excellent.

Thanks for putting so much effort into this Geoff, it is much appreciated.

  10. Thanks, Bart—I've appreciated your comments over the years here, as well. Same, botanicidalintaglio—it's always good to see you here. Here's to many more!
